Input Requirements

Ask the user for:

  • Student alert data (name/ID, course, alert type, date, details)
  • Institution context (what early alert system is used — EAB, Starfish, homegrown)
  • Available support services (tutoring, counseling, financial aid, basic needs)
  • Advisor caseload context (how many students? what's realistic?)
  • Term timeline (early, mid, late semester changes the urgency)

Anti-Patterns

  • DO NOT use punitive or blaming language ("you're failing" / "you haven't been showing up")
  • DO NOT overwhelm students with 10 resources — give 1-2 specific, relevant ones
  • DO NOT assume the reason for an alert — ask the student
  • DO NOT mark an intervention as "resolved" after one unanswered email
  • DO NOT ignore patterns across students — if 30% of alerts are from one course, that's an instructional issue, not a student issue
  • DO NOT share student information outside FERPA-authorized staff
